Germany has taken over the throne once held by Spain. Its recent gold at the Eurobasket, after defeating Turkey in the final, completed the same double that Spain’s national team had achieved in the previous cycle: European champion and world champion. The feeling is slightly different when comparing the two, as Spain’s golds in 2019 and 2022 were defined by the word ‘miracle,’ especially the continental conquest, while Germany is consolidating a fantastic squad with plenty of future projections. Sergio Scariolo’s team victories were magnificent because they carried even more merit when not starting as favorites, but their early elimination in the last championship confirms that those two titles were the final flashes of the Golden Age of Spanish basketball, with the last survivors of the glorious group led by Pau Gasol. The retirement of Rudy Fernández and the withdrawal of Sergio Llull marked the end of a dream era, now lived by Dennis Schröder and Franz Wagner’s Germany. To be more precise, one could say that there was still a survivor from that period in the Eurobasket, but he was on the opposing bench: Álex Mumbrú, who led the Germans to success as head coach. It has not been an easy European Championship for Mumbrú, who has been battling an illness that prevented him from fully carrying out his duties, but he was involved in the technical decisions. He was unable to attend the celebrations, as he was admitted to a hospital to complete his recovery. From here, we wish him the best and congratulate him on the victory. While Spain builds a new future, we have at least been able to savor a small piece of glory with one of the players who gave us so much joy.
