After being selected by the Chargers in the second round of the 2026 NFL Draft, Jake Slaughter has made it clear that his primary focus is contributing to the team, no matter where he plays. As Los Angeles held rookie minicamp this week, the conversation quickly turned to Slaughter’s potential move to guard.
“I’m going to go out and compete and do everything I can to be the best version of myself,” Slaughter said.
Although he was a standout center at Florida, Slaughter is familiar with the guard position. He logged significant snaps there early in his college career. He also noted that he had been working at guard during the pre-draft process, and his role there has intensified since joining the Chargers.
Shifting from center to guard brings tactical adjustments in pass protection and spatial awareness.
“For me, it’s always the difference in space,” Slaughter said. “Spacing differences, footwork differences here and there. So it’s a fun challenge.”
Known for his athleticism, Slaughter’s lateral mobility should allow him to excel at pulling and leading in space. His high-level agility should also help him mirror quicker interior pass rushers and effectively engage second-level defenders.
This skill set aligns well with what offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel expects from his guards.
“We want to play a certain style of ball that is convicted, that dictates the terms, so there is a level of quickness,” McDaniel said. “We’re looking for guys that can block people in space, where a lot of the big plays and the things that change games and scoring opportunities, where those occur.”
