The hosts had several opportunities, while Livingston hit the woodwork, had a goal disallowed for offside, and saw a penalty award overturned. Ultimately, the point helped United solidify seventh place after Aberdeen lost to St Mirren.

Home manager Jim Goodwin made four changes to the side that lost to Aberdeen on Saturday, bringing in Bert Esselink, Pan Camara, Sam Cleall-Harding, and Johnny Russell—making his first start since rejoining the club in March—for Iurie Iovu, Krisztian Keresztes, Dario Naamo, and the suspended Emmanuel Agyei.

Visiting interim boss Scott Arfield also made four alterations to the lineup that fell to Dundee last time out, with Stevie May, Emmanuel Danso, Cristian Montano, and Robbie Muirhead replacing Joel Nouble, Barrie McKay, Mo Sylla, and Danny Wilson.

Russell nearly made an immediate impact in the second minute after Ryan Strain burst down the right and picked out the striker, but his shot was blocked. Livingston threatened through Lewis Smith, whose long-range effort flew past home goalkeeper Dave Richards’ left post.

The visitors came agonizingly close to taking the lead when a May shot cannoned off the inside of Richards’ post, with Kerr’s follow-up blocked. May tested Richards again soon after with a fierce 25-yard drive that required a fingertip save.

Seven minutes before the break, Zac Sapsford set up Neil Farrugia, but Livingston keeper Jerome Prior produced a stunning stop to deny the frontman. Montano then headed home from close range, only for the assistant’s flag to rule it out for offside after a lengthy VAR check. Muirhead ended the half with a blistering shot tipped over by Richards.

After the restart, Sapsford’s header was cleared off the line by Brooklyn Kabongolo. Livingston responded with May embarking on a lung-bursting run before unleashing a shot that flew inches past the post, and Kerr then came close with a header.

United made changes just past the hour mark, with Owen Stirton having a quick chance but his shot from the edge of the box comfortably gathered by Prior. Livingston were awarded a penalty in the 85th minute when Cleall-Harding was adjudged to have brought down substitute Joshua Zimmerman. However, referee Irvine was called to the pitchside monitor by VAR and reversed his decision, booking Zimmerman for diving.
