Shane van Gisbergen delivered another stunning performance at Watkins Glen, securing his first Cup Series win of 2026 and his seventh career road course victory in NASCAR. That total ties Chase Elliott for the most among active drivers. The New Zealander, who took NASCAR by storm with his immediate road course dominance, overcame a massive deficit after a late pit stop to claim the checkered flag.
Michael McDowell finished second, while Connor Zilisch looked like a threat until a right-front tire issue ended his challenge. Chevrolet dominated the day, placing five drivers in the top eight. But the most jaw-dropping aspect was SVG’s rally itself.
After pitting from the lead with 25 laps remaining, van Gisbergen dropped to 26th place, needing to erase a 30-second gap. Charging on fresh tires, he carved through the field and reclaimed the lead with seven laps to go, ultimately winning by 7.288 seconds. He even performed his victory burnout before half the field had crossed the finish line.
“Yeah, pretty unreal and just thankful for my No. 97 Superfile Chevrolet team. Just an unbelievable day,” said the Kiwi. “The strategies worked out perfectly, and the car was magic—I could push when I needed to. To back it up from last year is pretty unreal. I love chasing everyone down with a tire advantage. Josh, my spotter, was excellent with lap times and gap info. I tried to calculate as I went and manage the tires so I’d still have something at the end. It’s just so special and really cool.”
He added, “I’ve done it in the O’Reilly Series before, but not here. It’s awesome to represent that and have it in Victory Lane.”
Michael McDowell, who has struggled in recent weeks, described the runner-up finish as a much-needed boost. “Second is awesome. It’s great to get momentum back. We wanted to win, but I’m proud of Spire and my guys. We restarted 27th and made quick work to get near the top ten. Then we cycled around and got track position. But honestly, even if we restarted right behind SVG, I don’t know if we had the pace. He still had a bit on us. So we have work to do, but it’s a good building block. Our road course program is coming around—top five at COTA, top five at Mexico. We just need a little more.”
McDowell acknowledged the gap: “We qualified second, and we finished second. Shane van Gisbergen was a couple tenths better.”
