Albacete Balompié went through a turbulent winter transfer window, losing two of their key players, Riki and Jon Morcillo, who left in pursuit of promotion that seems within their grasp. In response, the club brought in reinforcements like Martín Fernández to strengthen the squad. The Uruguayan has now become a regular starter under the manager.
Facing Andorra, Fernández delivered a solid performance as a starter, especially in defensive duties. “Andorra is a team that puts pressure on every opponent, regardless of who they are. We stayed compact and worked well defensively to secure three important points. The match was tough, but we managed to seize the opportunity and close it out. Luckily, there were plenty of players to finish, and either of us could have put the ball in the net,” he said.
With this victory, Albacete have achieved their season objective. “Reaching 50 points is our goal fulfilled. We had many ups and downs during the season. At times, we could have aimed higher, but it didn’t work out. There are big teams fighting for survival, and we should be happy with what we’ve achieved.” Fernández added: “It’s a relief, especially after our last match where we didn’t perform at our best. We have to appreciate and be content with our efforts. We felt the support from all the fans, even those who travelled. They endured the weather, and we’re very grateful for their backing.” He was referring to the dozen supporters who made the trip from Albacete to Andorra to cheer on the team during the holiday weekend.
“These kinds of matches drain you mentally and physically. You value the victory more, and it’s a huge relief,” Fernández noted, already looking ahead to the next fixture against Cultural Leonesa. Albacete, now with 50 points on the board, will host the León-based side, who still harbor hopes of avoiding relegation. A draw against Cádiz in the previous round was a setback for Rubén de la Barrera’s men, who will face a special match next Saturday at the Carlos Belmonte.
Albacete’s squad remains depleted by injuries. Alberto González hopes to recover Javi Villar and Pepe Sánchez, but will still be without Antonio Puertas, Víctor Valverde, Higinio Marín, Agus Medina, and Jesús Vallejo, who is a doubt after missing the last match in Andorra due to muscle discomfort. The coach from Málaga has had to juggle the available players in recent weeks. The injury crisis has forced González to constantly reassemble his team and remain competitive against opponents fighting for more ambitious goals or, in the case of Cultural Leonesa and Sanse (Albacete’s next two home opponents), fighting against relegation.
